Cleaning the bike with cold water containing motorcycle cleaners is always essential, especially after the bike is exposed to sea wind, sea water, dust, mud on roads and ice, snow in the winter. If the bike is cleaned regularly, the appearance of the bike will remain as the original for many years.
Do not use household cleaners because they will cause corrosion. Despite according to the terms of the motorcycle warranty, the tires are fitted against certain types of corrosive materials, and vehicle owners are recommended to follow sensible advice that will protect the tires against corrosion, wear and improve the appearance of motorcycles.
Prepare before washing the bike
Before washing your bike, please note some areas are not to allow water to enter in as mentioned below:
- Exhaust pipe hole: Cover with plastic bag tied with rubber strap
- Clutches, brake arms and switches on handlebars: Cover with plastic bags
- Start switch: Cover the key hole with tape.
- Eliminate jewelry: rings, watches, buckles, belt buckles, etc. that can scratch or damage painted or polished surfaces.
- Use a sponge or clean cloth to clean painted / polished surfaces and chassis areas.
- The chassis areas (such as the chassis and under the mudguard) will be more exposed to dirt on the road, so using the same sponge or cleaning pad can scratch the paint / polishing surface.
Bike wash
- Prepare a mixture of cold water and motorcycle cleanser. Do not use the highly alkaline soap that is common in regular bike wash because it leaves residue on the bike.
- Wash the bike with a sponge or soft cloth. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or steel wool as it will damage the paint / polish.
- Wash your motorbike with cold water
- Avoid spraying with great force on the following places:
Speedometer,
Brake cylinders and brake shackles,
Under the gas tank,
Air intake hose,
Neck bearings
Wheel bearings
Note:
The use of highly alkaline soap will leave residues on the paint surface and can also cause water spots. Always use low-alkaline soaps to assist with the cleaning process.
After cleaning
- Remove plastic bags, tape, and clean air vents
- Use lubrication for bolts and nuts
- Check the brakes before operating the vehicle
- Use a dry cloth to dry the remaining water. Do not allow excess water as this will lead to corrosion.
- Start the engine and ride for 5 minutes. Make sure the vent is adequate for exhaust.
